The continuous wavelet transform is used as a tool to extract the modal envelopes of measured surge response directly in units of peak-to-trough amplitude. Wavelet analysis is demonstrated to be a useful technique for decomposing spar platform surge response into constituent modes in order to analyze the time-dependent amplitude envelope of each mode independently. Once the modal envelopes for the response frequencies are extracted from the time series, it is straightforward to characterize the temporal evolution of the transient and to quantify the extent that steady state conditions are achieved in each mode.
