The John Deere 8000 series track (8000 T) tractors, introduced in June 1997 represent a significant change in steering system compared to previous John Deere tire tractor models. John Deere 8000 series track tractors are the first tractors in North America using 'steer-by-wire' philosophy. The new steering system uses an electric signal to control the electro-hydraulic hydro-static system. The steering system provides performance improvements in several areas for unmatched operator convenience and control. This paper describes the steering system configuration, components, operation, characteristics and some of the engineering considerations dealt with in the development process. The overall steering system truly represents a mechatronic designs.
