Neural net (NN) applications are being widely used as pattern recognition tools in the petroleum industry. They are used to upgrade and upscale well bore data. The Caro field, located along the Carisito structural trend in the eastern basin of Venezuela was used as a pilot area to test the NN application. The NN was used to upgrade older, limited log data to values of porosity, water saturation, and air permeability within acceptable error bar limits. It was also used to upscale this new information to net pay of flow units by rock type for each sandstone in the field to relate and predict performance behavior.
