Cold-weather climates present unique challenges for oilfield operators and chemical suppliers. Suppliers need to ensure that the cold weather will not adversely affect the performance and safe handling of their products. Frozen chemicals may be hazardous to handle, and their physical properties may be altered because of freezing and thawing cycles. While large oilfield operations may be able to store chemicals in heated buildings, smaller operations may not enjoy that same option. This article describes the considerations that went into the development of a freeze-proofed blend of glutaraldehyde, which was developed expressly for use in cold-weather oil fields.
