The choice of control algorithm for vibration control is very crucial for an after-market, low-cost active control component for automobiles with specific vibration problems. Several control design methods and algorithms are considered. The adaptive algorithm and proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control requires minimum amount of tuning. The simple PID algorithm performs in a predictable fashion and is easily tuned. However, it should be applied to a physical system that is correspondingly simple in its dynamics, a situation rarely afforded to after-market solution. The modeling process used with the adaptive algorithm satisfactorily characterizes these typically complex systems.
