With regard to functional and life cycle examinations on materials and components in automobiles the effects of noxious gases have a significant meaning. Air pollution by gases like SO2, H2S, NO2 and O3 are present in the immediate surrounding and the interior of the car in sufficient concentrations and must therefore be considered environmental qualification of modules, components and materials. In the past many standards, pre-standards and technical trend documents were in existence which reflected the different views regarding the test philosophy. Especially the choice of noxious gases, their concentrations and the necessity of combinations were disputed. This paper illustrates the problems of noxious gas tests of materials and technical products. Furthermore the effects of noxious gases on model materials are shown and as an example the noxious gas test on model materials is described.
