The use of polymer matrix composites continues to increase for primary and secondary structural components in commercial aircraft due to the superior strength to weight ratio of these materials compared to metals. However, there are concerns about the potential health hazards from carbon fibers released from burning composites in aircraft fires. The health risks stem from airborne fibrous dust and micron-size, respirable fibers following aircraft fire or explosion. An extensive review of the literature was conducted to examine the factors contributing to inhalation toxicity of fibrous matter. The toxicological significance of carbon fibers was reviewed in terms of the size and concentration of fibers emitted due to the incineration of composites. The current data derived from animal studies do not reflect high acute toxicity that can be attributed to carbon fibers. Further work is needed to determine if volatile organic vapors have a synergistic effect towards the toxicity of particulates.
