This paper discusses the safety and economic benefits that control the application of new technology in the field of aging aircraft. New technology is constantly being developed, quickly adding to the top of the technical community's wish lists. However, until these technologies withstand the rigors of a safety and/or economic review, they are usually replaced by the next innovation, eventually falling off the wish lists due to lack of interest or lack of the correct application. This paper will review various case histories where both safety and economic issues controlled the application of technology. It will demonstrate how the NDT community alone is usually not effective in making a major impact without integrating the airframe manufacturers, the aircraft operators structural and NDI engineers, the government agencies involved, and other groups directly affected by the technology changes they are trying to establish. In today's economic climate, management cannot afford to use new technology for the sake of technology alone. As a result, the inspection community must be innovative in its selection of technology, and in addition must be fully aware of the safety and economic ramifications of the application of new technology.
