Near net shape connecting rods are being optimized to reduce costs and improve the engine's performance. Improving the engine's performance is done by modifying the rod's design, manufacturing process and the engine running conditions. Also, cost reduction is done by analyzing the total component costs consisting of rough parts and machining. It is shown that fracture splitting connecting rods achieves a total cost reduction up to 25% compared to conventionally designed connection rods.
