A study of the field service corrosion behavior of aluminum alloys on automobiles was conducted on several fronts. In addition, painted and bare samples of newly manufactured aluminum sheet, and of bare and galvanized steel, were given the same laboratory and Daytona Beach exposures. It was found that the performance of aluminum was clearly superior to steel. Galvanic corrosion of direct steel-to-aluminum joints, even in regions in the vehicle belt line, was minimal even after 30 years.
