Surface finish features that are often filtered out in simple roughness evaluations can have a detrimental impact on a surface's sealing function. The non-skidded profilometer instrument necessary to reveal these waviness features are more expensive and less convenient than their compact counterparts. In this article, several factor are pointed out that need to be considered when performing surface finish measurements to assess a surface's suitability to fulfill its sealing function.
