Since 1995, PETROBRAS of Brazil and WESTINGHOUSE of the US have been working on a development effort, as part of their Technological Cooperation Agreement, to conceptualize the design of a subsea multiphase flow pumping system called SBMS-500. SBMS-500 is an electrically driven pumping system adequately deployed in deep waters to have a 500 m3/h total flow rate, a capacity of up to 60 bar of pressure increase and up to 95% GVF-gas void fraction at the suction, and have approximately 1.2 MW on the shaft. The conceptual design is thoroughly analyzed and considered technically viable. The two companies intend to initiate design and fabrication in the first quarter of 1997.
