One of the means to address the issue of traffic congestion is to construct underground rail lines. With the undergrounding of the main rail lines and the completion of underground rapid transit systems, highway traffic is free to flow again and the city is free of the noise and disruption that the trains cause. Underground transportation facilities have gained popularity in some of the major cities in the US and Asia in recent years. The advances in tunneling methodology as well as flooding and fire control systems, have made underground transportation a major growth industry, particularly in areas where new surface or elevated transportation is no longer tolerated.
