A series of investigation was carried out in order to find a suitable anode and its catalytic material for use in the superconducting MHDS thruster. It has been found that some kinds of anodes were shown the current efficiency of chlorine evolution in the range of about 80 to 10 percent. Materials of anodes used in this experiment are DSEO2, Pt-coated Ti, porous materials stratified anodes, filmy ruthenium and porous silica coated anodes, manganese oxide coated DSA and others. When the operation of magnetoelectrolysis was performed at 5T and 24 degree C, the oxygen evolution efficiency became higher by about 5% than that of 0T. The activity of chlorine evolution, in the magnetoelectrolysis at 5T, was reduced about 5% compared with that of without field. The anode of long life and that the low evolution efficiency of chlorine was obtained with Mn, Ru-coating titanium plate. The electrodes prepared by the plating Pt on Ti substrate and/or platinum metal plate can withstand high level alternating stress of reversible run in MHDS for long time.
