Railroad rails and frogs undergo wheel loadings which cause continuing plastic deformation and work hardening at the wheel/rail interface throughout the life of the rail or frog. The predominant performance measures for each, wear and fatigue, are both linked to the continuing plastic deformation. All rail and some frogs are eutectoid steels. However, austenitic manganese steels are most common in mainline switch frogs. Ultra high carbon (UHC) steels may have application for both rails and frogs. Rail is hot rolled into long lengths and then roller straightened. It can be heat treated using the residual heat of hot rolling to produce a high performance pearlitic rail. It is generally welded into long strings. The connective welding requirements may limit application of UHC steels for rail, especially in view of the competition from existing on line hardened, high premium pearlitic rail steels and high strength bainitic steels currently under development. The application of UHC steels to frog inserts may be easier to accomplish if simplification of the insert design is possible.
