This paper discusses the behaviour of stores and missiles externally carried on high performance aircraft during flight into buffet. A number of examples of test vehicle responses measured during buffet manoeuvres are presented to illustrate the effects and these are compared to similar responses relating to straight and level flight. Signal processing techniques that are suitable to characterise such buffet responses are discussed and a methodology for the derivation of vibration test specifications from measured data is described. The methodology takes into account the in-service likelihood of such conditions being encountered in various operational scenarios, involving different store types and carriage station on the host aircraft. This methodology is compared with that contained within MIL-STD-810E and that being advocated for STANAG 4370 and the UK's Def Stan 00-35.
