A novel approach was developed to provide the airport pavement research community with on-line access to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) airport pavement database, which is part of the FAA Runway Instrumentation Project at the Denver International Airport (DIA). The Internet was utilized as the automated data transfer mechanism. As shown in this paper, the developed Internet tools allow an end-user to easily browse through a massive amount of data to obtain specific data sets of interests. An example is also given to depict database applications. The potential of using Internet as a research tool is demonstrated. This approach not only provides end-users with the most convenient means to obtain data, but also allows the FAA to disseminate valuable research information as soon as it becomes available. It also permits worldwide users with Internet access to retrieve data sets as needed at their own convenience. The Internet address for the DIA database is http://www.airtech.tc.faa.gov/dbase/. This paper provides an outline of the DIA database structures with brief descriptions on major database tables contained in the database. The DIA database Internet server is then presented with step-by-step instructions on how the measured data can be retrieved from the server. At the time when this manuscript was written, sensor readings of 9,943 loading events for various aircraft types had been stored in the database with well over 1.3 gigabytes (1,300,000,000 bytes) of data.
