Increasing requirements for light weight car body, arc welding process is getting more and more important as concerns space frame structures obtained by joining of extruded beams or hydroformed tubes. A critical aspect of this technology is the choice of welding procedures and sequences of the assembling cycle, in order to minimize deformation of the structures. This paper presents the recent work carried out in Fiat Research Center to analyze and assess arc welding process. In particular, relative distortions due to arc welding have been studied on a simple T node in aluminum alloy. For this purpose experimental tests and finite element simulations have been worked out. The numerical and the experimental results are in good agreement. The outcome of this work is an understanding of the studied technology and a basis for the development of a methodology for process design.
