Due to the growing demand for protection against vehicle crimes, the need for security glazing is increasing rapidly. Most important is an improvement of the side glazing area. Sekurit Saint-Gobain responds to the customer needs with laminated sidelights of various structures in order to provide different security levels. In this paper, the relevant failure mechanisms limiting their security performance will be discussed in detail, and it will be shown that not only complex mechanical properties of the glazing, but also details of the door construction have a strong influence. Two different approaches of metrology are considered. On the one hand, component tests like BS AU 209 were used to simulate a given type of external attack on the glazing, i.e. they investigate several failure modes together. On the other hand, experiments were designed to isolate each failure mechanism and to investigate it separately. Both strategies are applied to investigate the influence of glass and interlayer for glass-plastic composites comprising different interlayer materials.
