Monitoring the car driver's vigilance is a complex problem. lt requires a non intrusive system able to measure and interpret symptoms independently of a driver's physical characteristics, way of driving and environment. Within the European Program SAVE (system for effective assessment of the driver state and vehicle control in emergency situations) a multi-sensor approach for improving the driver impairement diagnostic is considered. Among the information which can be used to predict driver impairement the observation of eyelid patterns seems to be one of the most relevant. Siemens is developing a non intrusive, real time video-image processing system for measuring the driver's eyelid pattern called the eyelid sensor. This paper gives an overview about the SAVE program. lt describes in section 3 the main HW and SW characteristics of the eyelid sensor. Finally, the results of preliminary evaluations performed for car daytime real-driving conditions and for night conditions on driving simulator are presented.
