Shorter times-to-market which is essential for a company' success in international competition require comprehensive technical know-how, suitable organisational structures and efficient development tools. Porsche's engineering activities are based on a tailored project organisation with cross-functional teams and early involvement of component suppliers in the development process. The efficiency of a development vitally depends on the application of latest-state development tools: Failure Mode and Effects Analyses or FMEAs in short are used to identify - at a very early development stage already - any potential risks in the planned manufacturing processes. Design Reviews are performed to assess the progress of a project, to identify the need for corrective measures and to ensure the cross-functional exchange of information. One-step simulation of the material-forming processes helps to find out critical areas in sheet-metal parts in the design phase already and allows the required modifications to be initiated. Mock-up manufacture helps to tune components, evaluating the fitting dimensions and check the reliability of assembly sequences well before manufacture of the first prototype is started. Prototype manufacture under production-type conditions reduce the set-up times and costs allows assembly sequences is precisely evaluated. This approach has considerably accelerated the development processes and is reflected by both the short times-to-market and the exceptional quality of the new Porsche models.
