The automobile industry is seeing an increased need for the application of plastics and their derivativeses in various forms such as fiber reinforced plastics, in the design and manufacture of various automotive structural components, to reduce weight, cost and improve fuel efficiency. Much of effort is being directed at the development of structural composites, to meet specific automotive requirements such as safety, strength, durability and environment standards. This paper presents the analytical correlation of standard structural tests such as bending, torsion, impact and crush on bonded sections made of fiber reinforced plastics of a typical automobile. Force deflection curves from the tests are compared with equivalent quasistatic bending, torsion, crush and impact analysis done on the typical sections. Good correlation was obtained in all cases. In the case of torsion test however, due to the biaxial nature of loading, the correlation between test and analytical results suggests the probable cross flow effects in plastics.
