Accelerated tribological testing of automotive components is getting more attention because of longer life of parts, the cost of field testing, the value of reducing engine friction, environmental issues related to leak prevention, etc. This presentation will describe a tribological approach that consists not only of reproducing real operating conditions but duplicating the field service mode or wear mechanism during laboratory or bench testing. The accelerated test methodoloyy consists of a metallurgical & meteorological examination of the field usage hardware with a description of the possible wear mechanism, formulation of the required performance of surfaces to secure necessary length of life, design and material and/or process selection to attain desired product life, and laboratory and/or bench testing to duplicate the field usage wear mode. To illustrate this approach, new equipment and methodology for accelerated bench testing of the rotary oil seal and shaft and piston-piston ring systems will be described.
