Many components in a modern aircraft are capable of reporting on their own health, using facilities put there primarily for the benefit of the unit repairer. This paper examines the possibilities for using this data to assist the aircraft maintainer to restore an aircraft to serviceability. The stages of this process are to capture the fault data, transfer it to the ground and incorporate it into the maintenance support system. Potential problems are identified and solutions suggested. In addition, events with maintenance significance are found either by systems themselves, or by ACMS. These can be processed in a similar manner. The paper is based on a real project, which has not yet advanced sufficiently for the predictions to be tested, but where many of the potential problems have been identified and included into the design.
