This paper reports the CFD overview in Japan and the results of a performance comparison of commercial CFD software. This project was performed as a part of activities by the CFD working group of the Fluid Simulation Special Committee of JSAE. The commercial programs used were SCRYU, STAR-CD, FIRE, PAM-FLOW, FLUENT, FIDAP, PowerFlow and CFX. One case of an external aerodynamic flow simulation and two cases of in-cylinder flow simulation were considered. A standard mesh and an simulation condition were prepared by the hosting administration office. Then, each commercial vendor in Japan performed the simulation. Steady state simulation was performed using a half-model with one known point of drag coefficient, CD, disclosed. All simulation results were converted to SGl OCTANE R10000 EWS (Engineering Work Station), with one CPU of 197 MHz in speed. Another calculation was also conducted using mesh which were optimized by each software vendor in Japan. The comparison results are qualified by the actual figures to compare the commercial CFD software performance.
