To combine simulation techniques with numerically based optimization strategies is an essential step to further reduce the time needed for the development of automotive vehicles. This is particularly valid when designing vehicle systems and vehicle subsystems like body shells with a comprehensive cross-attribute optimization approach. Herein will be presented the realization of such an optimization approach for efficient support of body engineering at FORD. Motivation, advantages and disadvantages of the implemented approach will be discussed. Emphasis is given to highlight capability of the approach and its successful application for additional reduction of body weight within a recent vehicle program. Current limitations as weil as future steps for improvements will be broached.
