The terms of competition in the automotive sector have changed considerably in the nineties. Due to the increased requirements great competitive significance must be attached to the product planning and development. Technical functions and parameters as well as a large part of the product costs are determined in early development stages. But during the early development phase, when system alternatives are discussed, not all of the information required, concerning system requirements, economic environment and technical parameters, is available. Many of these parameters can only be represented by estimated values. Nevertheless, important product decisions have to be based on these inexact estimates. To meet this challenge, a probabilistic model based approach for the economic-technical evaluation of product concepts is developed which enables the elaboration of decision preparing data based on imperfect information. Based on this approach, robust strategic and conceptional decisions can be made.
