An optimization of the riding comfort of the future German ICE3 high speed train was performed based on numerical simulations. Therefore the cars were modelled in detail and their mode shapes were computed. They were analysed visually, and with the help of strain energy distributions, to find areas with low local stiffness. Reinforcement measures were discussed, and their validity was checked by sensitivity analyses. More than 50 % of the car body aluminium extruded sections were finally reinforced. The suspension spring stiffness of heavy masses, mounted elastically to the undercarriage of the cars was tuned to further reduce the car body responses. Finally the bogie parameters were tuned for every car individually to minimize the excitation level.
