Since modern commercial vehicle suspension systems increasingly use level-controlled air springs, the question came up, whether the continually discussed air spring systems with natural damping could represent a technical alternative to the common combination of air springs with hydraulic dampers. Surely, more aspects are needed for a comprehensive answer than the vertical dynamic discussed in this paper. However, this very limited selective attitude makes a meaningful differentiation of each existing elementary potential possible. The results determined on an indoor test stand already indicate that the damping effects based on air throttling are much too small when the air spring is connected to a constant auxiliary volume. But, the more efficient working principle of a pneumatic damper also has to adhere to the physical laws of quadratic dependecy regarding spring travel and damper capacity. Investigations with the mobile quarter-vehicle test stand have proven that no sufficient damping of the natural axle motions caused by sole road surface undulations was possible. The oscillating behaviour of the system with the pneumatic damper is comparable to that with the adjustable hydraulic damper, when adjusted to a soft setting. The hydraulic damper incorporates a higher performance potential, since it is able to extract the system more energy, especially for small relative movements between axle and body. Resulting disadvantages of a firmly fixed adjustment can be avoided by an adjustable damper connected to an electronic control.
