An airbag concept is described which combines a controllable variable gas output of the gas generator with a sensor and electronic control system able to react on various crash scenarios, on belt status and on driver position. Based on the definition of risk areas an optical sensor records the out of position situation which is evaluated by a complex electronic control unit taking into account also signals from early crash sensors. The algorithms of the control unit decide to fire an adaptable two stage inflator composed of environmentally friendly gas generator and igniter materials.
