This paper details the performance of InnoVent variable airbag inflation. InnoVent controls the airbag inflation by allowing a portion of the gas produced by the inflator to be vented outside of the module. While InnoVent technology can be applied to driver and passenger airbag modules, this paper will focus on the driver side performance. Variable inflation is beneficial because it provides at least two levels of restraint. Low level inflation can be used to provide a basic level of restraint while reducing the risk of Inflation Induced Injury (III). High level inflation can be used to provide additional restraint in high severity crash scenarios. InnoVent performance data was collected from dynamic sled tests and static Out Of Position (OOP) tests. The data illustrates that InnoVent can be used to reduce the risk of III while maintaining protection across a range of crash severities.
