Lower leg injuries to car occupants in frontal crashes represent one of the major issues in vehicle safety in the present day. Vehicle certification regulations already set injury criteria targets which new vehicles are required to meet in crash tests, despite the fact that the mechanisms of leg injury are still not fully understood. By employing a wide range of crash test experience and techniques, the kinematics of dummy lower legs has been examined and a number of stages have been identified in the loading mechanism, which permits better understanding of which injuries may be inflicted under given conditions. These observations were confirmed by studies of real-world accidents, as well as crash data. The information presented serves as a guide for the vehicle designer seeking to minimise real world lower leg injuries. It highlights the ways in which the Hybrid III lower leg transducer information can be better utilised to reduce the most impairing injuries.
