The coupled vortex sheet and waves behind a hydrofoil are computed by means of a new nonlinear vortex method applicable to steady three-dimensional flows. The method is validated by comparison with measurements. Numerical investigations focus on the necessity to account for nonlinear wake effects in the hydrodynamics of fast ships. The new vortex model appears fully capable of explaining the interaction between a free surface and tip vortex.
