This paper describes a unique outwardly-opening direct injection gasoline injector. Its advantages for stratified-charge combustion include high dynamic range, desirable spray characteristics, and normal battery voltage (12 V) operation. High dynamic range is achieved with a dual-coil actuator, without varying fuel pressure. Separate opening and closing coils result in fast response without the use of conventional high-voltage drivers. Desirable spray characteristics are accomplished utilizing an outwardly-opening nozzle. Advantages of this sacless design include the absence of large particles (typically produced at the initiation and termination of the spray) and the flexibility to satisfy 'jet' or 'wall-controlled' charge stratification combustion systems. For this investigation, the spray character has been tailored for a typical 'wall-controlled' combustion system through modified nozzle geometry, allowing the spray cone to satisfy 'early' and 'late' injection requirements. This paper concludes with engine testing of this injector as applied to a typical 'wall-controlled' stratified-charge engine.
