Laser welding processes are a part of automated production. In order to achieve a high quality welding process, and to detect welding defects, an online process monitoring system has been developed. The process radiation emitted by the welding process, is measured by a photoelectric sensor. The process radiation signal is visualised and evaluated by suitable software. Several evaluation strategies of the process radiation are discussed, in order to find welding defects. For example, if a difference between the process radiation signal and a reference signal is found, a report signal is transmitted online to the PLC (Programmable Logic Control): Welding defects and interference to the beam guidance system can be detected by this way. The process radiation signal can also be used as a controlled value in a closed loop control. The quality of the welding process is improved by closed-loop control.
