This study investigates the mechanism of steering automotive vehicles with independent wheel traction by controlling the traction effort differential between the front wheels. It has found that 1. In order to control the steering angles of the front wheels, it is necessary to measure and control the longitudinal tyre force. In the simulation, this is also dependent of the tyre model. 2. The strategy of only controlling the traction effort at each wheel is a simple steering method. But, it brings out large slip ratios and slip angles on tyres, and thus increases the potential of steering instability. 3. The strategy of using the traction effort differential to directly control the steering angles of the front wheels does not cause large slip ratios and slip angels. This strategy can simplify the mechanical steering linkage in conventional automotive vehicles, and enable cost saving. It is also possible to realise this steering strategy by a pure electric and electronic device in drive-by-wire-vehicles. The other advantage of using the traction effort differential to steer automotive vehicles is that the steering stability controller can be integrated into the steering control strategy.
