A powertrain control module and the synthesis process in which it was developed is presented. The module is intended for rapid prototyping in target hardware. The application is a heavy duty diesel engine with a variable geometry turbine (VGT) and an automated fixed ratio gearbox without sychronizers. The VGT has a variable turbine swallowing capacity. This enables control of boost pressure which influences response characteristics and emissions, particularly diesel smoke. The control module, which is described on a functional specification level, controls the engine and gearbox together, resulting in a powertrain with truly integrated control. The control module is divided into three submodules; the engine control unit (ECU), the transmission control unit (TCU) and the powertrain control unit (PCU). The main functionality of the module presented is to execute the phases that result in a gearshift. Since the software used for modeling determines causality, truly physical decomposition, flexibility and reuse of models is achieved at all hierarchical levels.
