Listed below are the conclusions that are made from the simulation results conducted in this study: - The continuous skyhook control concept, when used in the semi-active suspension system, can provide enhancement of ride comfort over the passive suspension system. It, however, tends to worsen driving safety. - The phase delay due to dynamics of the continously variable damper has an adverse effect upon the control performance for ride comfort. Hence a fast responding actuator must be designed, and the time delay must be compensated using a controller like the force following control algorithm in this research. - The problem of degradation of driving safety in the skyhook damper can be solved significantly by the modified skyhook control or by the wheel resonance control. The former incorporates the passive damping effect in the skyhook damper, and the latter controls the wheel resonance state using a bandpass filter. - To practically implement the control concepts proposed in this study, consideration must be taken into the following issues: the number and the types of sensors available, simplicity and variety of controller tuning process, and computational complexity to digitally implement the controllers.
