Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) equipment is evolving rapidly, and ambitious plans are being made to integrate projects into a massive coast to coast network. With transistor densities growing exponentially, the equipment is becoming increasingly more powerful, faster, and smaller. As a result, systems and communications will become more and more complex, and higher powered semiconductors will flow into ITS equipment. One of the major challenges in the deployment of electromc equipment in ITS projects is dealing with the many variables associated with power quality. ITS deployments that ignore power quality issues will be faced with reduced system performance manifested by equipment failures and outages. Maintenance costs will also escalate as critical equipment left exposed to harmful power events sustains damage. Alternatively, deployments properly planned and designed with suitable protection can offer reduced life cycle cost. Such top-notch solutions begin with high power quality, which is achieved by proactively protecting critical loads with appropriate power protection technology. This paper will address the power quality issues faced by H'S designers. It will identify power condition considerations, define power protection technologies, identify power protection deployment considerations, and define a new power quality paradigm.
