Freeway incidents cost the United States over 100 million dollars each year, measured in wasted fuel, productivity loss, and air pollution. To reduce incident response time, control strategies should be devised to increase operational efficiency and traffic safety. This paper found that the uses of the simple speed-based incident detection algorithm works well based on the incident cases being evaluated for providing automatic incident detection assistance and supporting the needed effective freeway incident management.
