The paper describes the protocol for dedicated short-range communications (DSRC), designed for the support of road transport and traffic telematics (RTTT) applications. The DSRC protocol, based on the 5.8 GHz transmission technology, was standardized by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN TC 278) in September 1997. After a short overview of the DSRC architecture, the interface between the DSRC application layer and RTTT applications will be presented. The technique for initialization of the communication, the different service primitives and functionalities offered by the protocol stack are highlighted. Typical transaction scenarios for Intelligent Transport Systems, like electronic toll collection are described.
