Since the gear shift simulation for a automatic transmission calculates the torque and the rotational speed of every part during a shift, the shift characteristics and the load charged by every part can be easily grasped. The input data to the simulation are divided in two kinds of data, the parameters of every part related with transferring power and hydraulic pressures to clutches. The pressures to clutches can be made to change and be found for the better shift characteristics in the method that the pressure line drawn with a mouse on a computer is automatically converted to the input data to the shift simulation. As the friction material of clutches or brakes generates heat during a shift in a automatic transmission, the endurance of the friction material is important. The shift simulation calculates the heat and then the numerical analysis of heat transfer about a clutch is performed with the calculated heat from the shift simulation. As the results, SAE No. 2 test code and the thickness of clutch plate can be determined because the maximum temperature at a disk facing of a clutch is foreknown by the analysis of heat transfer in a transmission assembly and in SAE No. 2 tester.
