An autonomous vehicle takes an important part in industrial automation. Currently, most of the autonomous vehicles are guided by magnetic or optical reflection tapes on the floor. If the floor is soiled or the tape is worn down, however, the autonomoous vehicle may not function properly. In order to avoid this problem, we propose a vision system using ceiling images. The vision system acquires necessary information from the ceiling images and enables the autonomous vehicle to follow the correct route. The vision system evaluates the current direction and the location of the vehicle. Experiments on the autonomous garbage vehicle (AGV) are conducted at the JR Shi-Osaka platform in Japan. The experiments show that this system is useful and effective for practical use.
