One of the strongest drivers in automotive body assembly is the objective of reducing body weight. This involves using new designs, a greater proportiono of higher strength steel, tailored blanks and continuous joining methods in appropriate areas. The two main joint configurations found in vehicle manufacture and currently welded in steel are butt welds, which are used in the tailored blank production and lap joints, used for welding such as radiator supports, of to side panels and bonnet and boot components and hem flanges in door high stiffness panels or tailgates. Laser welding offers advantages for both of these applications due to its high welding speeds, low distoration, single-sided access capabilities and suitability for automation. Until recently, most of the developments had taken place using CO2 laser, but with the advent of high power ND:YAG lasers operating at 4.5kW power at laser source and the additional advantages of fibre-optic beam delivery a new range of applications has been opened up for exploitation. This paper will describe the capabilitiesa of a Lumonics high Power (4.5 kW) CW Nd:YAG laser and its application to the manufacture of tailored blanks and lap joints in automotive steel sheets, where welding speeds over 10m/min have been obtained. The laser is also suitable for the welding of alluminium alloy sheets at high processing speeds.
