In order for companies to be agile, they have to minimise the lead-time in the product and production development processes. Concurrent engineering is one way to accomplish this. This paper presents a method for systematic modelling and evaluation in the conceptual design of assembly systems for large products in high volumes. Alternative assembly system concepts are used as inputs to the model. These are created outgoing from the requirements and prerequisites given by the parallel product development process and the manufacturing strategy. The method then models and evaluates these concepts in a systematic and pre-defined way. This initial approach has been modified and tested through case studies of products and assembly systems in the automotive and white goods industry. By using the method, design and evaluation in early stages of development projects are assisted and the concurrent engineering of assembly system and products is facilitated. The vision of the project is to provide a tool integrated in a future realisation of the virtual factory technology.
