The design of a new off-road truck today is still a great challenge due to the very complex interactions between vehicle and soft soil. Although there are different mathematical models to describe single effects there are only a few established rules to find a successful design. Moreover it is not advisable to transfer the usual criteria of vehicle design for solid roads to off-road vehicles. Now, with the program ORIS (Off Road Interactive Simulation), developed at the IKK, an instrument was elaborated, to describe a complete multi-axle vehicle in a virtual terrain. With this tools it is possible to investigate the influence of different constructive parameters. This paper presents results of many simulations, which were done to investigate the influence of the number of axles on the mobility and the economy. To do so, 2-, 3- and 4-axle vehicles were compared regarding their rolling resistance, their drawbar pull and their hill-climbing abilities.
