A new finite-difference method has been developed and shows very efficient for he analysis of the nonlinear-viscous embankment hydrodynamics. The viscous effect of water could slightly reduce the rise of sea water during earthquakes and the hydrodynamic forces are almost the same between the Navier-Stokes and Euler analyses. In general, the ground displacements are less than 1 m for most recorded earthquakes. Therefore, for a real earthquake excitation, the viscous effects on embankment hydrodynamics is insignificiant and the Euler analysis is valid for embankment hydrodynamic analysis. The difference of the results calculated by fully nonlinear and weakly nonlinear free surface conditions is notable and the former condition should be used in the analysis. In general, the height of coastal embankment or offshore breakwaters are around 10 m or less. In the application of assaulting-wave induced coastal hydrodynamics, if the ratio of height of incoming wave the water depth is large (say larger than 0.3), both nonlinear and viscous effects might be significant. Not only the nonlinear analysis but also the viscous analysis should be included for evaluating surface run-up and wave forces of the assaulting waves on coastal embankments and offshore breakwaters.
