Diesel engine design criteria refer to limits for certain parameters on which the design is based in order to control allowance for additional loads. This leads up to a set of specifications for manufacturing, installation and operation. Many damage investigations indicate that rapid wear and damage is often caused by a lack of adherence to engine designer/manufacturer assumptions. This paper discusses the problem for diesel engine operators to fulfil assumptions for operation set by engine designers when they are too ideal. Also mentioned is how engine manufacturing and installation practice narrows the limits for operational parameters. The paper concludes that, although difficult, relevant experience feed-back is a concern for all parties involved. Design assumptions must to a larger degree allow for requirements to sturdiness and simplicity for the users. (Contributions and author's replies in Vol. 7, p. 1791)
