This paper describes the basic principles of an automatic road transportation system consisting of three components, a general guidance system, a sensor network for traffic space surveillance, and a sensor system for the monitoring of road conditions and traction parameters. The sensor system for traffic space surveillance is implemented as a network of high-resolution short range radars, which detect non-cooperative road users and random obstacles in addition to the co-operative road users. The implementation of the system is possible with a compatible transition phase, in which both automatically guided and conventional vehicles may be on the roads. The major advantages of the system would be a drastic increase in the use of all resources, and a drastic reduction of the necessary parking space in cities.
