The autogyro is a rotary wing aircraft. However, unlike the helicopter, the rotor is not powered during flight. Lift is generated from the autorotation of the rotor which occurs due to the flow of air through the disc resulting from forward motion. Therefore the aircraft cannot hover no climb vertically. Despite this limitation the autogyro was used as a commercial aircraft prior to World War II. Much of the development of the leisure autogyro was undertaken by constructor/pilots with little knowledge of the loads encountered by the airframe and control linkage. Consequently a situation exists where all the aircraft are flying today as a result of a service history rather than quantitative measurements and analysis. To address this deficiency a project was undertaken to construct a data acquisition system suitable for recording the in-flight loads of an autogyro. The results obtained would be used to give an indication of the scale of pilot forces and of those acting in the control linkage in the absence of any other comparable data. The autogyro selected for the trial was a VPM M16, as shown in Fig. 1. The aircraft has two seats in a tandem configuration, a mass of 450 kg and a two-bladed teetering rotor and is powered by a 100 hp engine.
